British Commonwealth, Niue, Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022 AD), VIKINGS – Gods, Kings, Warriors Series, Silver Two Ounce $2 ‘King Cnut’, 2015, issued by the Scottsdale Mint. Obverse: Third bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing to the right, wearing royal diadem, necklace and earrings, date below, country, denomination, monarch, weight and fineness surrounds. Reverse: Bust of King Cnut of the House of Knýtlinga facing, crowned, draped and armoured and holding spear, name “KING CNUT” incuse on bust, Nordic Runes legend surrounds, “ᚲᚾᚢᛏ ᚱᛖᚲᛋ ᚨᚾᚷᛚ ᛟᚱᚢᛗ” (transliterated as the Latin “CNUT RECS ANGLORUM”). Mintage of 1,999; Numbered 1087. Housed in wooden display box with certificate of authenticity and outer cardboard case. Bold design and with a nice antique finish, the Scottsdale mint clearly doing their research and using a coin legend of an Anglo-Saxon penny of Cnut, naming him the King of the English. Mint State.
Cnut ‘the Great’ was a member of the Danish House of Knýtlinga and became King of England after the death of Anglo-Saxon King Edmund Ironside (aka Edmund II) of the House of Wessex. Two years later he ascended the throne of the Kingdom of Denmark in 1018 AD, and after a decade of conflict against the other Scandinavian Kingdoms, claimed the throne of Norway in 1028 AD, uniting the three kingdoms he ruled as the ‘North Sea Empire’.
