Description
Ptolemaic Kingdom, time of Ptolemy VI Philometor (‘Mother Loving’) to Ptolemy VIII Euergétēs II (‘the Benefactor) Tryphōn (‘the Opulent’), Æ Unit (27.44g, 31mm), Series 7C, Alexandria mint circa 180-116 BC. Obverse: Head of Zeus-Ammon facing to the right, wearing tainia. Reverse: Pair of eagles stand left perched on thunderbolts, wings closed, double cornucopia to left field, legend surrounds, “ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ”. Svoronos-1424b; Lorber & Faucher Series 7C. A bold obverse portrait and with fairly well struck reverse devices, a nice minor bronze unit from series 7C and visually quite appealing for the type, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The obverse Ancient Greek legend reads “ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ” or “Πτολεμαΐς βασιλεύς”, Latinized as “Ptolemaḯs Basileús”, with an English translation as “King Ptolemy”.
