Description
Flavius Valens (Valens), Eastern Augustus of the Valentinianic Dynasty 364-378 AD, Silver Siliqua (2.19g,18mm), Trier mint 367-375 AD. Obverse: Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valens facing to the right, legend surrounds, “DN VALENS PF AVG”. Reverse: Roma enthroned left, helmeted and draped and holding long sceptre in left hand a Victoria atop globe aloft in right, exergual-ground line below, mintmark “TRPS⦁” in exergue, legend surrounds, “VRBS ROMA”. RIC-27e; RSC-109a. Struck on a slightly ragged flan with slightly porous metal, minor marks on face, a decent portrait nonetheless and nicely toned, Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Dominus Noster, Valēns, pius fēlīx Augustus”, with an English translation of “Our Lord, Valens, the blessed and pious Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads “urbs Rōma”, with an English translation of “the city Rome”. The Reverse mintmark is heavily abridged and would read in full as “Augusta Trēverōrum”, with an English meaning of “City of Augustus in the land of the Treveri”.
