Description
Roman-Britannic Empire, Allectus, usurper-Augustus of Gaul and Britannia 293-296 AD, Æ Antoninianus (2.98g, 22mm), Londinium mint circa 293 AD. Obverse: Radiate-crowned and cuirassed bust of Allectus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP C ΛLLECTVS PF ΛVG”. Reverse: Providentia stands facing to the left, draped in stola and holding baton in right hand and resting cornucopia in left arm, globe at foot to the left, “S Λ” to field either side, mintmark “[ML]” in exergue, legend surrounds, “PROVID ΛV[G]”. RIC-35; Sear-13832. Struck on a notably broad flan with quite an admirable portrait, less common in legible condition, Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Caesar Allēctus pius fēlīx Augustus”, with an English translation of “Imperator Caesar Allectus, the blessed and pious Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads “prōvidentia Augustī”, with an English translation of “foresight of the Augustus”.
