Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont, Charles Felix of the House of Savoy, King of Sardinia and Duke of Savoy and Genoa 1821-1831 AD, Gold Eighty Lire (25.76g, 33mm), 1825 L, Turin mint. Obverse: Bare-headed bust of King Charles Felix facing to the left, engraver’s name “A. LAVY” (Amedeo Lavy) raised on truncation, date below, legend surrounds, “CAR· FELIX D·G· REX SAR· CYP· ET HIER·”. Reverse: Escutcheon of the Armorial of the House of Savoy ensigned with the royal crown and accollée with the collar of the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation, wreath of oak surrounds, denomination below between mintmark “L” and ‘eagle’s head’, legend surrounds, “DVX SAB· GENVAE ET MONTISF· PRINC· PED· &·”. Edge: Inscription in incuse lettering, “FERT – FERT – FERT “. KM-123.1; Friedberg-1133. A bold obverse portrait on this large Italian gold piece, some minor contact marks, near Extremely Fine, reverse better.
The Latin legend spanning across both obverse and reverse is the royal titulature of King Charles Felix, reading unabridged as “Carolus Fēlīx, Deī grātiā, rēx Sardiniae, Cyprī, et Hierūsalēm, Dux Sabaudiae, Genuae, et Montis Ferrātī, prīnceps Pedemontiī et cētera”, with an English translation of “Charles Felix, by the grace of God, King of Sardinia, Cyprus and Jerusalem, Duke of Savoy, Genoa and Montferrat, Prince of Piedmont, etcetera”.
