Description
Byzantine Empire, Kōnstantīnos IV ‘ho Néos’ (Constantine IV ‘the Younger’), Byzantine Emperor of the Heraclian Dynasty 668-685 AD, Gold Tremissis (1.51g, 16.5mm), Constantinople mint 668-685 AD. Obverse: Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine IV facing to the right, legend surrounds, “[C]ONSꞆANꞆINЧS PP V”. Reverse: Cross Potent central, mint and fineness “CON [OB]” in exergue, legend surrounds, “VICꞆORIA AVGЧ[S]”. Sear-1162. A nice gold minor and of typical quality in strike indicating Constantine IV, near Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Cōnstantīnus, perpetuus Augustus”, with an English translation of “Constantine, the perpetual Augustus”. The reverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Victōria Augustōrum” followed by the 8th officina letter “H”, with an English translation of “Victory of the Augusti”. The Latin in the reverse exergue reads “Cōnstantīnopolis, obryzum”, with an English translation of “of the city of Constantinople, pure gold” – this had an unabridged meaning of “minted in the city of Constantinople, 1/72 of a Roman Pound of pure gold”, as “OB” was short for the Latin “obryzum” as well as the Greek numerals for “72”.
