Description
Roman Empire, Caesar Vespasiānus Augustus (Vespasian), Roman Emperor and founder of the Flavian Dynasty 69-79 AD, Silver Denarius (3.43gm 17.5mm), ‘Judaea Capta’ commemorative issue, Rome mint circa 21st Dec. 69 AD – early 70 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Vespasian facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP CAESAR VESPΛSIΛNVS ΛVG”. Reverse: Judaea seated to the right, resting her head in her hand in an attitude of mourning, “IVDAEA” in exergue. RIC-2; RSC-226; Sear-2296. A very noteworthy example of the illustrious commemorative issue celebrating the Flavian’s victorious Judaean conquest, all devices choicely on flan and quite well struck, lightly toned and visually attractive, good Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Caesar Vespasiānus Augustus”, naming the emperor’s full regnal name. The reverse Latin legend in the exergue simply names “Iūdaea”, in English as “Judaea”, naming the region personified above and in reference to “Iūdaea captā” or the capture of Judaea by the Flavians.
