Description
Macedonian Empire, Wars of Diadochi period, Alexander III of the Argead Dynasty, Basileus of Macedon 336-323 BC, Silver Drachm (4.16g, 16mm, Attic standard), early posthumous issue, Sardes mint 322-319/8 BC, struck under the authority of Menander or Kleitos ‘leukós’ as Satrap of Lydia, during the reign of King Philip III Arrhidaeus. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus ‘Aëtophoros’ (“Eagle Bearer”) seated left, holding perched eagle aloft in right hand and grounded sceptre in left, drapery flows around his waist on crossed legs, torch to left field, “AT” monogram below throne, “[ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ]” downward to right. Price-2637. Struck on a compact flan impossible to present all devices as a consequence, detail is bold and in high relief, a nice early posthumous issue, near Extremely Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
