Macedonian Empire, the Alexandrine Era, Alexander III of the Argead Dynasty, King of Macedon 336-323 BC, Silver Tetradrachm (17.19g, 28mm, Attic Standard), posthumous issue, Amphipolis mint circa 315-294 BC, under the authority of Cassander as regent of Macedon or later as Basileus. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus seated on backless throne facing to the left, drapery flows around his waist onto crossed legs, both feet resting on stool, holding eagle in outstretched right hand and sceptre in left, cantharus below throne, “Λ” above torch to left field, “AΛEΞANΔPOY” downward to right. Price-468. Struck exceptionally well on a broad flan, the desirability of this piece only furthered by the European mint in Amphipolis, details Very Fine although a very bold coin in hand.
