Description
Seleucid Empire, Seleucus I Nicator, as Basileus 305-281 BC, Silver Tetradrachm (17.17g, 25mm, Attic Standard), uncertain mint ‘4’, possibly in Cappadocia or northern Mesopotamia, after 305 BC. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus seated on backless throne facing to the left, drapery flows around his waist onto crossed legs, both feet resting on stool, holding eagle in outstretched right hand and sceptre in left, “ΣT” monogram below throne, “HY” monogram in circle (Houghton Monogram 299.4) to left field, “ΣEΛEYKOY” downward to right, “[Β]AΣIΛEΩΣ” below. Struck on a broad, slightly concave flan, the obverse in quite fine style, much more attractive in hand rather then through a camera lens, good Very Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
