Description
North-eastern Gaul, the Suessiones tribe, Gold Stater (6.08g, 20mm), late 2nd century to mid 1st century BC. Obverse: Devolved laureate head of Apollo facing to the right, consisting of crescents and wreath. Reverse: Devolved horse facing to the right, with sinuous body, box-shaped head, disjointed, linear limbs and triple-tail, horseman above in the form of a fibula-like figure, eight spoked wheel and crescent below body, pellet within circle to left, exergual line of jagged pattern below. Delestrée & Tache-167. Struck from worn obverse dies and with areas of flatness, very well centred horse with plenty of peripheral devices and clear exergual line, a collectible example, Very Fine, reverse a touch better.
