Description
Free State of Costa Rica, Silver Two Reales, emergency issue by authorization 1846, Type V countermark – bilateral stamp on a Spanish Empire Silver ‘cob’ Two Reales dated 173X, Potosi mint, Viceroyalty of Peru (KM-29). Obverse of host: Cross central, heraldic elements of the Kingdoms of Castile and León in each angle, all within double tressure of arches forming an octo-lobe, Latin legend surrounds – central countermark of a sun above mountains within border, date below and legend “REPUB. DE CENT. DE AMER.” surrounds. Reverse of host: Pillars of Hercules above ocean waves, ‘PLVS VLTRA’ and date within – central countermark of a tree dividing the denomination within border, legend “HABILITADA EN COSTA RICA J.B.” surrounds. KM-54. Certified and graded by PCGS as Very Fine 20. A superb example of the type with a host coin presenting plenty of evenly worn detail – a far cry for the type that usually sees obliterated hosts, the counterstamps fairly legible although a bit blundered, overall a very excellent offering of the Costa Rican type.
