Description
Holy Roman Empire, State of the Duchy of Brabant, Joanna of the House of Reginar and Wenceslaus I of the House of Luxembourg, Duchess and Duke of Brabant 1355-1383 AD, Gold Mouton d’Or (4.55g, 30mm), Vilvoorde mint 1357-1371 AD, type struck in the name of Duchess Joanna. Obverse: Agnus Dei stands left, head upturned right, in front of banner flying from ornate cruciform staff, “IOꞂ DUX” below, all within tressure of arches, inner beaded border and legend surrounds, “AGꞂ· DЄI· QVI · TOLL’· PЄCA· ᙏVꞂDI· ᙏISЄRЄRЄ ꞂOB·”. Reverse: Ornate cross feuillue and fleurdelisée central with cinquefoil within angled quadrilobe at centre, large Lis in each quarter, all within polylobed arch, small Lis in each spandrel, legend surrounds, “XPC: VIИCIT: XPC: RЄGИAT: XPC: IMPЄRAT”. Delmonte-43; Witte-387. A most handsome ‘Gold Lamb’ of Brabant, offering sharp detail despite the areas of soft strike typical of the type, some ever so light strike cracks on flan, a very desirable piece, near Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend is a liturgical prayer based on John 1:29, reading unabridged as “Agnus Deī, quī tollis peccāta mundī, miserere nōbīs”, with an English translation of “Lamb of God (the Sacrificial Lamb), who takes away the sins of the world, have pity/mercy on us”. Below the Lamb reads unabridged as “Iōhana Ducis”, with an English translation of “Duchess Joanna”. The reverse Latin legend is the ‘Laudēs Rēgiae’ (Royal Praises/Acclamations), a hymn used in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, it reads unabridged as “Chrīstus rēgnat, Chrīstus vincit, Chrīstus imperat”, with an English translation of “Christ reigns, Christ conquers, Christ commands”.
