Description
British Empire, British East India Company, the Madras Presidency (of Fort St. George), Silver Quarter Pagoda (10.59g, 26mm), Second issue, Madras city mint 1808-1812 AD. Obverse: Nine-tiered Gopuram of a temple built on stony ground, eighteen stars (9 each side) to inner field, all within buckled garter inscribed with the denomination in Persian and English (correctly written), the buckle is oval-shaped and with cross tongue. Reverse: Vishnu rises from a lotus flower, holding sword in his left hand, cross of nine beads to left and eleven beads to right, beads absent above and below Vishnu, double beaded border surrounds, all within ribbon inscribed with the denomination in Tamil and Telugu (correctly written), legend includes stops, star above between ribbon’s terminating ends. Stevens-x unlisted die pairing (Obverse E; Reverse XIII); cf. Stevens-3.166-3.171 for obverse E type#; KM-352. Certified and graded by PCGS as Almost Uncirculated 55. A boldly struck example with a deep, steel-grey tone.
