Description
British Empire, British East India Company, the Madras Presidency (of Fort St. George), Gold One-Third Ashrafi of Five Rupees (3.87g, 19mm), Madras mint circa 1819 AD. Obverse: Arms of the East India Company (comprising an escutcheon bearing the Cross of Saint George, first quarter: round escutcheon bearing the Royal Arms of the Kingdom of England and surmounted by Royal Crown), below Rampant Lion left holding Saint Edward’s Crown, legend surrounds, “ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY·”. Reverse: Persian legend in several lines: پنج روپیه کمپنی انگریز بهادر; transliterated as “Panj Rupiya Kampany Angrez Bahadur” (“Five Rupees of the Honorable English Company”). Stevens-4.7; Pridmoore-244. Certified and graded by PCGS as Mint State 63. Struck with quite refined dies – an exceptional example of the type.
