Description
George IV of the House of Hanover, King of the United Kingdom 1820-1830 AD, Gold Sovereign (7.96g, 22mm), 1826, Royal mint London. Obverse: Second bare head of King George IV facing to the left, date below, legend surrounds, “GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA”. Reverse: Royal Arms of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Hanover, and Brunswick (1816-1837) within ornate mantle and surmounted by Saint Edward’s Crown, legend surrounds, “BRITANNIARUM: REX FID: DEF:”. Marsh-11. Mintage of 5,724,046. A few light obverse marks, easily overlooked when held in hand, a typically nice reverse featuring fairly well struck armorial, good Very Fine or a bit better, reverse near Extremely Fine.
The Latin legend is the Royal titulature of King George IV and begins on the obverse and continues onto the reverse, reading unabridged as “Geōrgius quartus, Deī grātiā, Britanniārum Rēx, Fideī Dēfēnsor”, with an English translation of “George the fourth, by the grace of God, King of the British People, Defender of the Faith”.
