Description
George IV of the House of Hanover, King of the United Kingdom 1820-1830 AD, Æ Penny, 1826, second issue. Obverse: Laureate head of King George IV facing to the left, date below, legend surrounds, “GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA”. Reverse: Britannia seated right, helmeted and draped, holding trident in left hand and resting right on the Union Jack with plain saltire; lighthouse and ship in sail in background, National floral emblem of English rose, Scottish thistle and Irish shamrock in exergue, legend surrounds above, “BRITANNIAR: REX FID: DEF:”. S-3823; KM-693. Certified and graded by PCGS as MS62BN. Nice glossy blue patina and sharp details, some cameo to surfaces seen in hand.
The Latin legend is the Royal titulature of King George IV and begins on the obverse and continues onto the reverse, reading unabridged as “Geōrgius quartum, Deī grātiā, Britanniārum Rēx, Fideī Dēfēnsor”, with an English translation of “George the Fourth, by the grace of God, King of the British People, Defender of the Faith”.
