Charles II of the House of Stuart, King of England 1660-1685 AD, Silver Shilling (5.89g, 21mm), 1668, Royal mint London. Obverse: Second laureate and draped bust of King Charles II facing to the right, legend surrounds, “CAROLVS· II· DEI· GRATIA·”. Reverse: Crowned cruciform Shields of Arms of the House of Stuart, Garter star central, pair of interlocking ‘c’s in each angle, Irish harp of 5 strings, date either side of top crown, legend surrounds, “·MAG· BR· FRA· ET· HIB REX·”. Bull-511; S-3375. Typical weakness over portrait and light marks, otherwise a charming shilling with a nice grey patina, near Very Fine.
The Latin legend is the royal titulature of King Charles II, reading unabridged as “Carolus secundus, Deī grātiā, Magnae Britanniae, Franciae et Hiberniae Rēx”, with an English translation of “Charles the Second, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland”.
