Description
Gaius Julius Verus Maximus, as Caesar under his father Maximinus I 236-238 AD, Silver Denarius (2.60g, 19mm), Rome mint 236-238 AD. Obverse: Bare headed and draped bust of Maximus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IVL VERVS MAXIMVS CAES”. Reverse: Assortment of priestly emblems of the Pontificate, from left to right: lituus, knife, jug, simpulum (ladle) and sprinkler, legend surrounds, “PIETΛS ΛVG”. RIC-1; RSC-1; Sear-8404. A fresh and attractive denarius, typically bold and with a charming portrait, reverse a little soft, near Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Iūlius Vērus Maximus Caesar”, naming most of the Caesar’s regnal name. The reverse Latin legend reads “pietās Augustī”, with an English translation of “Piety of the Augustus”.
