Description
George I of the House of Hanover, King of Great Britain 1714-1727 AD, Coronation Medal in Silver (15.40g, 35mm), 1714, by J. Croker. Obverse: Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of King George I facing to the right, legend surrounds, “GEORGIVS· D:G· MAG· BR· FR· ET· HIB· REX·”. Reverse: King George I enthroned on the left, wearing coronation robes and holding globus cruciger (Orb) and Sceptre of Office, being crowned by Britannia, who stands draped and holding spear and Union Jack shield in left hand, coronation date in Latin in exergue “IN AVGVRAT· XX· OCT· MDCCXIII·”. Eimer-470; MI-424/9. The fields a little busy with minor contact marks, nicely toned with a steel grey and evenly worn, near Extremely Fine, reverse good Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Geōrgius, Deī grātiā, Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex”, with an English translation of “George, by the grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland”. The exergue is inscribed with the coronation date, in this case written as “inaugurated”, reading unabridged as “inaugurat 20 Octōber 1714”.
