Description
Thrace, Callatis, Gold Stater (8.47g, 18mm, Attic gold standard), in the name and types of King Alexander III of Macedon, circa 250-225 BC. Obverse: Head of Athena facing to the right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet ornamented with a coiled snake and pearl necklace, hair flows downward. Reverse: Nike stands facing to the left, draped in peplos and wearing stephane, holding laurel wreath aloft in right hand and resting stylis in left arm, “K” to left field, “HP” monogram (Price Monogram 496) to lower left field below wing, “ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ” downward to right. Price-909. A very visually appealing and handsome example of a late posthumous Alexander stater, perfectly centred each side, particularly the reverse which displays most of the stylis and monogram, details good Very Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
The reverse Ancient Greek reads “ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ” or “Ᾰ̓λέξᾰνδρος”, Latinized as “Aléxandros” and in English as “Alexander”, naming King Alexander III of Macedon.
