Description
George I of the House of Hanover, King of Great Britain 1714-1727 AD, Gold Quarter Guinea (2.09g, 15mm), 1718. Obverse: Laureate head of King George I facing to the right, legend surrounds, “GEORGIVS· D˙G· M· BR· FR· ET· HIB· REX· F:D·”. Reverse: Cruciform Shields of Arms of the House of Hanover as the sovereigns of Great Britain (1714-1801 AD), each surmounted by Saint Edward’s crown, date with ‘Z’ type 1s and 7 either side of top crown, Garter star at centre over sceptres saltire, legend surrounds, “BRVN ET L· DVX S· R· I· A: TH ET· EL·”. A very charming and most noteworthy example of the one-year type, near perfectly centred with all devices on flan and with a lovely display of amber toning throughout the gold, only typical, minor hairlines to obverse, details Extremely Fine or better.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Geōrgius, Deī Grātiā”, Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex, Fideī Dēfēnsor”, with an English translation of “George, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith”. The Reverse Latin legend continues from the obverse and reads “Brūnsvīcēnsis et Lūnebērgēnsis Dux, Sacrī Romani imperiī Archīthesaurarius et Elector”, with an English translation of “Duke of Brunswick and Luneberg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire”.
