Anglo-Viking Britannia, Norse Kingdom of Northumbria, Cnut, Anglo-Norse King of Southern Northumbria circa 900-905 AD, Silver Penny (1.43g, 20mm), Class Is, ‘Ebraice Civitas’ type, York mint. Obverse: Large inverted patriarchal cross central with four pellets in upper angles, trio of pellets to bottom left, quartet of pellets to bottom right, legend arranged in alternating letters surrounds, “CИVT REX”. Reverse: Small cross pattée central, two pellets to inner field, all within inner beaded border, legend which begins with initial mark cross pattée surrounds with several arrangements of pellets throughout, “EB IΛI ICE ITI”. Although with a loss of flan, likely a consequence of strike, the offered piece is an exceptional grade for an ever popular Anglo-Viking type, very collectible as such and further desirable due to the increasing interest in Anglo-Saxon and Viking numismatics, details Extremely Fine.
