Description
Celtic Britannia, the Durotriges tribe, Silver Stater (5.59g, 19mm), ‘Cranborne Chase’ type, circa 65 BC – 45 AD. Obverse: Devolved and disjointed laureate head of Apollo facing to the right, consisting of crescents and wreath. Reverse: Devolved and disjointed horse facing to the left, with double crescent body, four linear limbs, tail of several linear lines, and head consisting of voided rectangle with pellet and box either side; pellet within circle to right, array of pellets above, exergual line of jagged pattern with pellets below. Of quite attractive metal, very well struck with only minor rust to the die, slightly off centre on the reverse although with most of the horse’s head present on flan, good Very Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
