Born by the name of Mārcus Iūnius Brūtus, Brutus was a member of one of the most celebrated Roman families, gens Iūnia, more specifically the family branch of gens Iūniī Brūtī. In 59 BC, Brutus was adopted by one of his relatives, Quīntus Servīlius Caepiō of gens Servīlia, and was thereafter known by the name Quīntus Servīlius Caepiō Brūtus, and would go on to become a prominent Roman Statesman and opposer of Gāius Iūlius C.f. C.n. Caesar growing autocratic power. He is best known as taking a leading role in the fateful assassination of the aforementioned Dictātor Perpetuō on the Ides of March of 44 BC.
Gens Iūnia saw an exceptional amount of prominent statesmen throughout the whole of Rome’s history across all of its branches – the Brūtī, Pērae, Pennī, Sīlānī, Blaesi, and Rūsticī, with important members being traced back as far as the Roman Monarchy. Another noteworthy member was Lūcius Iūnius Brūtus, the nephew of the seventh and last King of Rome, Lūcius Tarquinius Superbus, who was, by traditional accounts, instrumental in the overthrowing his uncle, ending the monarchy and founding the Roman Republic. He thereafter served as one of its first consuls.
