Roman Empire, Titus Aelius Hadriānus Antōnīnus pius (Antoninus Pius), Roman Emperor of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty 138-161 AD, Gold Aureus (7.26g, 19mm), Rome mint 152-153 AD. Obverse: Laureate bust of Antoninus Pius facing to the right, drapery over far-left shoulder, legend surrounds, “ΛNTONINVS ΛVG PIVS PP TR P XVI”. Reverse: Antoninus Pius stands left, togate and holding globe aloft in right hand, legend surrounds, “COS IIII”. RIC-226c. A handsome aureus of Antoninus Pius with portrait in typically high relief, the reverse type understated and from his extensive ‘COS IIII’ series, lustrous and nicer in hand, near Extremely Fine.
The Latin legend spans across both obverse and reverse, reading unabridged as “Antōnīnus Augustus pius, Pater Patriae, Tribūnīciā Potestāte sextum decimum, cōnsulāritās quārtum”, with an English translation of “Antoninus the pious Augustus, Father of the Nation, invested with Tribunician Power for the sixteenth time, honoured with the office of Consul for a fourth term”.
