Description
Marcus Antonius, as Imperator and Triumvir of the Second Triumvirate, Silver Denarius (3.55g, 17mm), Legionary series, ‘Legio VI Ferrata’, Patrae (?) military mint 32-31 BC. Obverse: Praetorian Galley in sail to the right, ores extended, billowing flag atop ship’s mast, legend surrounds above and below, “ANT AVG IIIVIR· R· P· C”. Reverse: The Sixth Legion’s Aquila central between two Signa Militaria, “LEG VI” below. RSC-33; Sear-1479; Crawford-544/19. A touch off centre on the obverse although quite choicely struck on the reverse which displays Legio VI’s aquila and signa, evenly worn, details good Fine to near Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Antōnius Augur, Triumvir reī pūblicae cōnstituendae”, with an English translation of “Antonius the Augur, Triumvir in deciding the Republic of the People”, in essence meaning “[Marcus] Antonius the Augur, one of three Triumvirs of the Second Triumvirate responsible for the Roman Republic”. The Reverse Latin wording reads “legiō sextus”, with an English translation of “Sixth Legion”.
