Description
Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, General and Statesman of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, died 12 BC, Æ As (12.07g, 29mm), restitution issue struck under Gaius (Caligula), Rome mint 37-41 AD. Obverse: Head of Agrippa facing to the left, wearing rostral crown, legend surrounds, “M AGRIPPA· L·F· COS III”. Reverse: Neptune stands facing to the left, naked apart from drapery which flows over both arms, holding dolphin aloft in right hand and trident with left, “SC” to field either side. RIC-58; Cohen-3. Displaying a deep darkened patina and well centred either side, some light surface roughness otherwise a very visually appealing example, details Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Mārcus Agrippa, Lūciī fīlius, Cōnsulāritās tertium”, with an English translation of “Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, honoured with the office of Consul for a third term”. The reverse bears no legend except for the letters “SC” in the field, which reads “senātus consultum”, with an English translation of “by Decree of the Senate”.
