Tiberius Claudius Nero Germanicus, Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty 41-54 AD, Gold Aureus (7.73g, 19mm), Ludgunum mint 41-42 AD. Obverse: Laureate Head of Claudius I facing to the right, legend surrounds, “TI CLAVD· CAESAR· AVG· GERM· PM· TR· P”. Reverse: Legend central in three lines within oak wreath, “EX· SC OB CIVIS · SERVATOS”. Sear-1831; RIC-15; Cohen-34; Calicó-356a. A humble yet imposing rendition of the fourth Roman emperor, engraved in quite fine, youthful style and accompanied by an understated reverse design, a demonination seldom seen available for commerce when compared to Claudius’ predecessors, particularly the extensive Pontif Maxim series of Lugdunum mint under Tiberius, of the utmost collectability and desirability, details Very Fine and quite scarce.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germānicus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestās”, stating Claudius I’s full regnal name and several of his titles, with an English translation of “Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs, invested with Tribunician Power”. The reverse Latin legend reads “ex senātus consultum, ob cīvis servātōs”, with an English translation of “By Decree of the Senate, in17 direction of saving/serving the citizens”.
