Roman Empire, Mārcus Aelius Aurēlius Vērus Caesar (Marcus Aurelius), as Caesar of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty 138-161 AD under Titus Aelius Hadriānus Antōnīnus pius (Antoninus Pius), Gold Aureus (7.27g, 18mm), Rome mint 153-154 AD. Obverse: Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius facing to the right, legend surrounds, “ΛVRELIVS CΛESAR ΛVG PII FIL”. Reverse: Roma stands left, helmeted and in military attire and holding Victoria aloft in right hand and parazonium in left, legend surrounds, “TR POT VIII COS II”. RIC-460 [PIUS]. A handsome portrait of a youthful Marcus Aurelius, struck in typically high relief and with dies of nice style, evenly worn both sides, nicer in hand, good Very Fine.
The Latin legend spans across both obverse and reverse, reading unabridged as “Aurēlius Caesar, Augustī piī fīlius, Tribūnīciā Potestāte, cōnsulāritās secundum”, with an English translation of “Aurelius Caesar, son of the pious Augustus, invested with Tribunician Power, honoured with the office of Consul for a second term”.
