Description
Roman Empire, Lūcius Aurēlius Vērus (Lucius Verus), as Augustus of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty 161-169 AD, Gold Aureus (7.19g, 19.5mm), Rome mint 165 AD. Obverse: Laureate and cuirassed bust of Lucius Verus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “L VERVS ΛVG ΛRM PΛRTH MΛX”. Reverse: Lucius Verus, in military attire and on horseback, bounds over a fallen Parthian soldier whilst he spears his foe, legned surrounds, “TR P V IMP III COS II”. RIC-545. A superb piece offering portraiture of fine style and struck in high relief, the reverse type, reminiscent of Trajan’s sestertii which reference his Dacian conquests, portrays Lucius Verus in victorious splendour and a depiction of his title of ‘Parthicus Maximus’, better in hand, good Very Fine, scarce.
The Latin legend spans across both obverse and reverse, reading unabridged as “Lūcius Vērus Augustus, Armeniacus, Parthicus Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestāte quīntum, Imperātor tertium, cōnsulāritās secundum”, with an English translation of “Lucius Verus Augustus, conqueror of the Armenians, great conqueror of the Parthians, invested with Tribunician Power for the fifth time, honoured with the title of Imperator for the third time, honoured with the office of Consul for a second term”.
