United States of America, Æ ‘Flowing Hair’ Cent or ‘1/100’ Dollar (10.63g, 28.5mm), 1795, Plain Edge type, Philadelphia mint. Obverse: Head of Liberty facing to the right, hair flowing, cap to left, date “1795” below, “LIBERTY” above. Reverse: Denomination “ONE CENT” central within wreath of olive, value of a dollar “1/100” below, country “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” surrounds. Sheldon-76b (Rarity 1). Certified and graded by NGC as Almost Uncirculated 55 Brown. A nice early U.S.A. Flowing Hair cent, despite some light blemishing the offered piece boasts a dark and even monochromatic patina and evenly worn devices. A very desirable numismatic piece, scarce.
Several Sheldon 76b 1795 ‘Flowing Hair’ One Cents have sold through the years, such as Stacks Bowers Galleries PCGS AU55BN (CAC) selling for USD 7200 (2021) and a PCGS AU55BN for USD 5040 (2018). Heritage Auctions sold a PCGS AU58BN for USD 9900 in May 2024, demonstrating the exponential rise in price with grade.
