Description
Mārcus Clōdius Pūpiēnus Maximus (Pupienus), Roman Emperor Apr/May to Jul/Aug 238 and third during the ‘Year of the Six’, Silver Antoninianus (4.67g, 21.5mm), Rome mint Apr-Aug 238 AD. Obverse: Radiate-crowned, draped and cuirassed bust of Pupienus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP CAES M PVPIEN MAXIMVS AVG”. Reverse: Clasped hands, legend surrounds, “PATRES SENATVS”. RIC-11b; RSC-21; Sear-8522. Well-toned with a dark olive-grey patina, choicely centred particularly the reverse, obverse legend a little soft, a nice example of a popular emperor, good Very Fine, reverse better.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperator Caesar Mārcus Pūpiēnus Maximus Augustus”, naming most of Pupienus’ regnal name. The reverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “patrēs senātūs”, with an English translation of “fathers/heads of the Senate”.
