Description
Decimus Caelius Calvinus Balbīnus (Balbinus), Roman Emperor Apr/May to Jul/Aug 238 and fourth during the ‘Year of the Six’, Silver Denarius (3.08g, 20mm), Rome mint Apr-Aug 238 AD. Obverse: Laureate and draped bust of Balbinus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP C D CAEL BALBINVS AVG”. Reverse: Liberalitas stands left, draped in stola and holding coin counter aloft in right hand and resting cornucopia in left arm, legend surrounds, “LIBERALITAS AVGVSTORVM”. RIC-3; RSC-10; Sear-8488. A masterful example displaying well struck devices and a bold portrait, the obverse really quite handsome with light toning highlighted with brighter greys, the reverse a bit soft in strike, good Extremely Fine, reverse Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperator Caesar Decimus Caelius Balbīnus Augustus”, naming the majority of Balbinus’ regnal name. The reverse Latin legend reads “līberālitās Augustōrum”, with an English translation of “Generosity of the Augusti”, referencing both Balbinus and Pupienus.
