Description
Caesar Nerva Trā̆iānus ‘Optimus Prī̆nceps’ (Trajan), Roman Emperor of the Nerva-Antonine Dynasty 98-117 AD, Silver Denarius (2.95g, 18mm), “Dacia Capta” commemorative issue, Rome mint 108-109 AD. Obverse: Laureate bust of Trajan facing to the right, drapery over far-left shoulder, legend surrounds, “IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC PM TR P”. Reverse: Dacia, in a state of mourning, seated left on a pile of captured military arms, “DAC CAP” in exergue, legend surrounds, “COS V PP SPQR OPTIMO PRINC”. RIC-98; RSC-120a. A nice example of the ‘Dacia Capta’ series as commemoration of Trajan’s conquests of Dacia, a touch weak over some reverse lettering else sharp devices, near Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “Imperātor Trāiānō Augustus, Germānicus, Dācicus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribūnīciā Potestas”, with an English translation of “Imperator Trajan Augustus, Conqueror of the Germans, Conqueror of the Dacians, Chief High Priest of the College of Pontiffs, invested with Tribunician Power”. The reverse Latin legend reads unabridged as “cōnsulāritās quīntum, Pater Patriae, Senātus populusque rōmānus optimō prī̆ncipī, Dācia Captā”, with an English translation of “Honoured with the Office of Consul for a fifth term, the Senate and the People of Rome to the ‘Best Ruler’, Dacia captured”.
