Description
Lūcius Septimius Sevērus Pertināx (Septimius Severus), Roman Emperor and founder of the Severan Dynasty 193-211 AD, Silver Denarius (3.87g, 17mm), Rome mint 197-198 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Septimius Severus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP X”. Reverse: Jupiter seated to the left, bare except for drapery flowing over left shoulder and waist, holding Victoria aloft in right hand and sceptre in left, legend surrounds, “IOVI CONSERVATORI”. RIC-111a; RSC-236; Sear-6289. Struck on a somewhat compact, thick flan but with all devices clear and bold, the portrait and figure of Jupiter somewhat exceptional, details good Extremely Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Lūcius Septimius Sevērus Pertināx Augustus, Imperātor decimum”, with an English translation of “Lucius Septimius Severus Pertinax Augustus, honoured with the title of Imperator for the tenth time”. The reverse Latin legend reads “Iovī cōnservātōrī”, with an English translation of “Jupiter the Protector”.
