Description
Lūcius Septimius Sevērus Pertināx (Septimius Severus), Roman Emperor and founder of the Severan Dynasty 193-211 AD, Silver Denarius (3.61g, 19mm), Laodicea mint 198-202 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Septimius Severus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “L SEPT SEV ΛVG IMP XI PΛRT MΛX”. Reverse: Victoria advances left, draped in stola and holding laurel wreath aloft in right hand and olive branch in left, legend surrounds, “COS III PP”. RIC-504; RSC-100; Sear-6270. A noteworthy example with a refined portrait unreminiscent of non-Rome mints, lightly toned and visually charming in hand, Extremely Fine.
The Latin legend names the emperor and his titles of office and begins on the obverse and continues onto the reverse, reading unabridged as “Lūcius Septimius Sevērus Augustus, Imperātor nōnum, Parthicus maximus, cōnsulāritās tertium, Pater Patriae”, with an English translation of “Lucius Septimius Severus Augustus, honoured with the title of Imperator for the ninth time, great conqueror of the Parthians, honoured with the office of Consul for the third time, Father of the Nation”.
