Description
Vespasianus, Roman Emperor and founder of the Flavian Dynasty 69-79 AD, Silver Denarius (3.15g, 17mm), Judaea Capta commemorative issue, Rome mint circa 21st Dec. 69 AD – early 70 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Vespasian facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP CAESAR VESPΛSIΛNVS ΛVG”. Reverse: Judaea seated to the right in attitude of mourning, resting head in hand, “IVDAEA” in exergue. RIC-2; RSC-226; Sear-2296. A bold Judaea Capta denarius, the obverse quite choice with only slight blundering to lettering, the reverse typically a bit soft in strike and some slight green adhesions, choicely centred each side, good Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Caesar Vespasiānus Augustus”, naming the emperor’s full regnal name. The reverse Latin legend in the exergue simply names “Iūdaea”, in English as “Judaea”, naming the region personified above and in reference to “Iūdaea captā” or the capture of Judaea by the Flavians.
