Description
Marcus Salvius Otho, Roman Emperor 15th Jan. – 16th Apr. 69 AD and the second of the Year of the Four Emperors, Silver Denarius (3,20g, 17mm), Rome mint 69 AD. Obverse: Bare head of Otho facing to the right, legend surrounds, “[IMP M OTH]O CAESAR AVG TR P”. Reverse: Securitas stands facing to the left, draped in stola and holding wreath aloft in right hand and sceptre in left, legend surrounds, “SECVRITAS PR”. RIC-8; RSC-17; Sear-2162. Toned and with a decent portrait, unfortunately a bit off centre on the obverse losing some of his name “OTHO”, otherwise Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Mārcus Othō Caesar Augustus, Tribūnīciā Potestās”, with an English translation of “Imperator Marcus Otho Caesar Augustus, invested with Tribunician power”. The reverse Latin legend reads “sēcūritās populī Rōmānī”, with an English translation of “security or safety of the Roman People”.
