Description
Decimus Clodius Septimius Albinus, as Augustus 195-197 AD and the fourth of the Year of the Five Emperors, Silver Denarius (3.51g, 16mm), Lugdunum mint 195-197 AD. Obverse: Laureate head of Clodius Albinus facing to the right, legend surrounds, “IMP CΛES D CLO SEP ΛLB ΛVG”. Reverse: Clasped hands over legionary Aquila, legend surrounds, “FIDES LEGION COS II”. RIC-20b; RSC-24; Sear-6166. Deeply toned and with a choice obverse, the reverse off centre and soft in strike, scarce issue as Augustus, good Very Fine.
The obverse Latin legend reads “Imperātor Caesar Decimus Clōdius Septimius Albīnus Augustus”, naming the emperor’s full regnal name. The reverse Latin legend reads “fidēs legiōnum, Cōnsulāritās secundum”, with an English translation of “faith/loyalty of the legions, honoured with the office of Consul for a second term”.
