Description
Flavius Gratianus, Western Augustus of the Valentinianic Dynasty 367-383 AD, Silver Siliqua (1.97g, 18mm), Trier mint 367-375 AD. Obverse: Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Gratian facing to the right, legend surrounds, “DN GRATIANVS PF AVG”. Reverse: Roma seated facing to the left on throne, helmeted and draped and holding long sceptre in left hand and Victoria atop globe aloft in outstretched right, exergual-ground line below, mintmark “TRPS·” in exergue, legend surrounds, “VRBS ROMA”. RSC-86†a; RIC IX-45c Trier. A choice, problem free piece, deeply toned and evenly worn, very collectible as such and certainly nicer in hand, details Very Fine.
The Obverse Latin legend reads “Dominus Noster, Gratiānus, pius fēlīx Augustus”, with an English translation of “Our Lord, Gratian, the blessed and pious Augustus”. The Reverse Latin legend reads “urbs Rōma”, with an English translation of “the city Rome”. The Reverse mintmark reads in full as “Augusta Trēverōrum”, with an English meaning of “City of Augustus in the land of the Treveri”.
