Description
Icaac II Angelos, Byzantine Emperor of the Angelos Dynasty in his first reign 1185-1195 AD, Electrum Aspron Trachy (4.31g, 27mm, scyphate), Constantinople mint 1185-1195 AD. Obverse: Virgin Mary enthroned facing forward, nimbus-crowned and wearing pallium and maphorium, holding the head of infant Christ, wrapped in drapery and also nimbate, “MP” to top left, “ΘV” to top right. Reverse: Archangel Michael standing on the right, beardless and nimbus-crowned, wearing full military attire and holding jewelled sceptre in left hand and with his right crowning Isaac II Angelos who stands on the left, wearing divitision and chlamys and holding cruciform sceptre aloft in right hand and akakia in left, “Θ” to field above, “X” above “MH” to lower right, “ICAAKIOC ΔЄC” surrounds to left.
