Description
Roman Republic, M. Calidius, Q. Metellus, and Cn. Fulvius, Silver Denarius (3.89g, 17.5mm), Rome mint 117 BC. Obverse: Head of Roma facing to the right, wearing winged Attic helmet, mark of value to right field, “ROMA” downward to left. Reverse: Victoria, holding laurel wreath aloft in right hand and reins in left, commands biga which advances to the right, moneyer’s name “C NFOVL M·CA·Q·MET” (‘NF’, ‘VL’ & ‘MET’ ligate) below and continues in the exergue. Struck in exceptionally bold relief, particularly on the reverse, a touch off-centre on the obverse missing much of “ROMA”, otherwise nicely toned with original cabinet grey supplemented with idyllic rainbow hues through the devices, near Extremely Fine.
