Description
Roman Republic, A. Spurilius, Silver Denarius (3.98g, 28mm), Rome mint 139 BC. Obverse: Head of Roma facing to the right, wearing winged Attic helmet, mark of value to left field. Reverse: Luna, wearing crescent on head and holding whip aloft in right hand and reins in left, commands biga which advances to the right, moneyer’s name “A·SPVRI” (‘VR’ ligate) below, “ROMA” in exergue. Crawford-230/1; Sydenham-448. A most visually appealing rendition, awash with original cabinet grey toning supplemented with an idyllic displaying of rainbow colour through the devices, choicely centred each side, evenly worn, and a scarce moneyer, near Extremely Fine.
