Description
Roman Republic, C. Servilius Vatia, Silver Denarius (3.97g, 17.5mm), Rome mint 127 BC. Obverse: Head of Roma facing to the right, wearing winged Attic helmet, mark of value to right field, lituus to left field, “[ROMA]” below. Reverse: Battle scene on horseback between two warriors, the warrior on the right wields a large round shield inscribed “M” in his left hand and spear in right, moneyer’s name “C·SERVEIL” (‘EI’ ligate) in exergue. Crawford-293/1; Sydenham-483. Very boldly struck with the devices in a very imposing relief, the reverse battle scene noteworthy despite the minor hair line scratches below the horse, obverse struck off centre although only missing “ROMA”, near Extremely Fine, reverse Extremely Fine.
