Description
Roman Republic, M. Junius, Silver Denarius (3.88g, 18mm), Rome mint 145 BC. Obverse: Head of Roma facing to the right, wearing winged Attic helmet, mark of value to right field, ass’s head to left field. Reverse: The Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, on horseback in gallop to the right, each wearing Phrygian cap and chlamys and wielding spear, moneyers name “M·IVNI” below, “ROMA” in exergue. Crawford-220/1; Sydenham-408. An exceptionally handsome example, nicely toned with an overall cabinet grey supplemented with amber hues through the central devices, as well centred as one can expect for the Dioscuri types, near Extremely Fine.
