Description
Macedonian Empire, Wars of Diadochi period, Alexander III of the Argead Dynasty, Basileus of Macedon 336-323 BC, Silver Drachm (4.22g, 17mm, Attic standard), posthumous issue, Teos mint 310-301 BC, struck under the authority of Antigonos I ‘monóphthalmos’ (one-eyed) in the position of Strategos of Asia. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus ‘Aëtophoros’ (“Eagle Bearer”) seated left, holding perched eagle aloft in right hand and grounded sceptre in left, drapery flows around his waist on crossed legs, “ΔΗ” monogram to left field, “ΠΡ” monogram below throne, “[Α]ΛΕΞΑΝΔ[ΡΟΥ]” downward to right. Price-2290. Compact flan but well struck and an obverse of quite angular facial features and reverse inscription of large letters, a bold example in hand, good Very Fine.
