Description
Macedonian Empire, Hellenistic period, Alexander III of the Argead Dynasty, Basileus of Macedon 336-323 BC, Silver Drachm (4.17g, 21mm, Attic standard), late posthumous issue, Miletos mint 295-275 BC, struck under the authority of Demetrios I ‘Poliorkētḗs’ as Stephanephorus of Miletos, Lysimachos as King of Asia Minor, the Seleucid Dynasty, or the Ptolemaic Dynasty. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus ‘Aëtophoros’ (“Eagle Bearer”) seated left, holding perched eagle aloft in right hand and grounded sceptre in left, drapery flows around his waist on crossed legs, “MI” monogram to left field, “ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ” downward to right. Price-2151. Struck on a notably broad, oval flan, the reverse displaying full devices struck choicely, a nice example of a late posthumous issue by a mint city which fell into between many powers, fully embodying the chaos of the Hellenistic period, good Very Fine.
