Description
Macedonian Empire, the Alexandrine Era, Philip III Arrhidaeus of the Argead Dynasty, Basileus of Macedon 323-317 BC, Silver Drachm (4.17g, 16.5mm, Attic Standard), Colophon mint 323-319 BC, under the authority of Menander or Kleitus ‘the White’ who held the position of Governor of the Satrapy of Lydia. Obverse: Head of Herakles facing to the right, wearing lion skin headdress, paws tied before neck. Reverse: Zeus ‘Aëtophoros’ (“Eagle Bearer”) seated left, holding eagle aloft in right hand and sceptre in left, drapery flows from his waist onto crossed legs with feet resting on stool, lyre to left field, “ΦIΛIΠΠOY” to right field. Price P43. An immediately posthumous Alexander III drachm struck in the name of Philip III Arrhidaeus, nicely toned and more visually handsome in hand, Very Fine.
