Boeotia, Thebes, Silver Stater (12.21g, 21mm, Aeginetan standard), Magistrate ‘KAΛΛI’ (‘KALLIAS’), circa 378-338 BC. Obverse: Boeotian Shield. Reverse: Amphora central, Magistrate’s name “KA ΛΛI” to field either side, all within incuse concave circle. BCD Boeotia-555; BMC-151; SNG Copenhagen-340. A masterful example of the Theban stater, a type notorious for its lack of obverse centring, our offered piece displays a mostly centred, handsome shield and a reverse amphora with plenty of remaining bodily detail, attractively toned, Extremely Fine, reverse near Extremely Fine.
